The American Crisis” was written by Thomas Payne as he traveled with troops during the American Revolution.  Thomas Paine is most noted for his letters called “Common Sense” which called for independence from British tyranny.  “Common Sense”  was published in January 1776 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.  Nearly 120,000 copies were in circulation by April of that same year.  Paine’s writings were straightforward and to the point.  His two main points in these letters were (1) independence from England and (2) the creation of a democratic republic.

Thomas Paine was one of the most influential and important figures in the American Revolution.  He is less known for his most crucial role in the Revolution which is the writing of “The American Crisis”.  We have all heard the saying the pen is mightier than the sword, well Paine’s writings certainly were mighty.  Thomas Paine’s writing of “The American Crisis”, was certainly a dose of inspiration to the soldiers in the American Revolution.  The war was not going well for the colonist at the time he penned his articles.  But the words that he delivered in his writings inspired the bravery of the men to prevail and secure a victory.

The Declaration of Independence” was adopted on July 4, 1776. Most of the delegates to the Second Continental Congress signed the document on August 2, 1776. By putting their names on this paper, these men risked losing everything if the British won the American Revolution.

Today we find ourselves in crisis, not like the ones that Thomas Paine wrote about in his articles, but a crisis of morality, inflation, lack of patriotism, the destruction of historical documents and monuments and so much more.  The constitution that Thomas Paine and so many others gave their lives and reputations for is being trampled through innuendo and the fact that most people today don’t even know what the constitution says.  They believe what they hear others say and not what is really fact or is written in the constitution.  We hear democracy not democratic republic.  They are two very different things.  A democracy is where the strong prevail and a democratic republic is where all men are created equal.  A free society is what a democratic republic stands for.

Much like the freedom that is talked about in the Bible.  These are the scriptures that our country was founded on.  Verses like 2 Corinthians 3:17, “ Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. Galatians 5:13-14, “You, my brothers and sisters, were to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: Love your neighbor as yourself.” Or Galatians 5:1, “ It is for freedom that Christ set us free.  Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”  There are a lot more scriptures on freedom.  We cannot find freedom in man or a political party but rather in Christ Jesus.

Today as we celebrate our freedom from the tyranny of King George III, we must look only to Christ to find our true freedom.
